Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American musician and rapper. Her career as a musician as well as a film and television artist has won her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens, both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked the class at Irvington High School. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was born and raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was given to her her cousin when she was eight. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. She performed the hit song Home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is among the founding members of the Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the tune. The singer signed Latifah and then released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
