Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived to a musical family 9 August 1993 in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the daughter and cousin to the singing sensation Dionne. She began singing in the choir of the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a young child at the age of 15, she had begun singing backing vocals professionally alongside the mother of her on Chaka Khan's hit song from 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she briefly worked as a fashion model and appeared on the Seventeen cover. She also performed the backing vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. Her singing with New York-based band Material brought attention to major record labels such as Arista. They signed her with Arista in 1983 and continued to work for the rest of her professional career. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut album for an artist in the year 1985. From the album, she released several hit singles such as Saving all My Love for You How Will You Know That You're Good to Love And The More Love of All. This resulted in her having seven US Top Ones in a row. It was even better than the Beatles. The album sold 3 million copies the first year as well as 25 million around the world. She won her first six Grammys. The Whitney 1987 release, which included Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as hits, helped build upon the successes she'd had. But the 1992 film The Bodyguard sealed her spot among the top-selling musicians of all-time. Although the film was not highly appreciated and neither did her performance, the soundtrack to her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You hit the number one spot on both singles and albums charts in the United States for a period of time. She sold 44,000,000 copies. In the same year, she got married to former New Edition star Bobby Brown with whom she was the sole parent of their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993. Around this time, her drug abuse became well documented and she was able to use it regularly in 1996.
